Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a condition in which the body makes too many activated immune cells (macrophages and lymphocytes).

People with HLH usually develop symptoms within the first months or years of life.

It occurs when there is an uncontrollable proliferation of hyper-activated macrophages and T-lymphocytes. The hyper-activated macrophages engulf haematopoietic cells resulting in a deregulated immune system, which in turn attacks various tissues in the body. The weakened body becomes susceptible to infection. Main symptoms and co-morbidities for HLH include:

Autoimmune conditions
Leukaemia
Lymphomas
HSCT
Infection (especially with EBV)
Diabetes
Obesity
COPD
Heart Failure

Data is split into 5 year age ranges (0-4, 5-9 etc) from 0 to 100+ years, across multiple countries.
